Four-year EngD scholarship with Airborne Composites UK Ltd: Coupling digital and automation technology with process control for a more efficient future in composites manufacture


Project Description

Salary/stipend:
£21,500 p.a.

In order to achieve consistent quality of the components manufactured using composite manufacturing processes it is necessary to drive out the inherent variability of those processes. The proposed way forward is to utilise automation coupled with the process control in various forms and at different stages of the manufacturing process to enable the process stability. This project will look to explore current manufacturing control techniques (such as SPC) to understand their limits and test the assumptions inherent in their implementation with the goal to creating a more efficient, more customisable production process, using composites manufacture as an example and integrate automation into the various stages of manufacture coupled with process controlled to enable robotized and automated production . This will be achieved by developing end effectors and automating processes such as material handling or forming.

Candidate requirements:

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROJECT IS NOT AVAILABLE TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS DUE TO TIER 4 VISA REQUIREMENTS.
Applicants with ‘home student’ status and holding or about to graduate with a first or 2.1 degree in structural or chemical engineering, materials science or physical sciences.
