Dr Elisabeth Carter  Applications accepted all year round  Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is interested in examining fraud, cyber-enabled crime and fraudulent interactions to join the vibrant postgraduate community at Kingston University, London, in the Department of Sociology, Criminology and Politics, to study for a PhD under the supervision of criminologist and forensic linguist Dr Elisabeth Carter. You will be self-funded and hold a Masters degree in a relevant discipline, and ideally, you will have expertise in using interactional methodologies and experience of practical engagement with organisations that are involved in fraud prevention.

The PhD will address one or more of the following areas or areas closely associated with these, will provide significant contributions to academic understandings of fraud as a unique crime type, and deliver evidence-based contributions that inform practical fraud prevention strategies.

Areas of interest are:

  • The interactional strategies of perpetrators of fraud
  • The language of manipulation and persuasion of perpetrators of fraud
  • Institutional talk
  • Deception
  • Coercion
  • Language as evidence
  • Negotiation, power and interaction

Contact Dr Carter on [Email Address Removed] for an informal discussion on your proposal.
