Project Description

Dr Emma Wagstaff invites expressions of interest for doctoral research focusing on the relationship between text and image in the twentieth- and twenty-first century French or francophone context. Possible topics include creative writers’ responses to visual art, ‘livres d’artistes’ (‘artists’ books’ produced in collaboration between writers and artists), visual poetry, ‘bande dessinée’, and writers’ engagement with new technologies. Dr Wagstaff may recommend co-supervision with, for instance, History of Art, if the project would benefit from input from another discipline.

Funding Notes

There are a limited number of funding opportunities with the College of Arts and Law, however, competition for these scholarships is fierce and only those with the highest credentials are likely to be successful. For more information see:

The main source of funding for a PhD in this field is the AHRC Midlands 3 Cities Doctoral Training Partnerships (410 PhD studentships over a five year period):

Enquiries from self-funded students are also welcome.
