Applications are invited from candidates with undergraduate or masters qualifications (1st class) from all disciplines relevant to computer security, including engineering, sciences, and the social sciences. All studentships offer a generous tax-free stipend and tuition fees to support UK/EU students. PhD scholars spend the first year undertaking comprehensive formal training followed by two-three years of focused research, and a writing period of six months.
Connected devices from small measurement devices to robots are increasingly playing a leading role in hospitals, manufacturing, agriculture, and many other areas. For instance, hospital robots carry out core surgical procedures including incisions, controlling blood loss, and carrying out repair work, under the oversight of human surgeons. As we start to use connected industrial robots to perform critical tasks, several challenges arise. First, how can we ensure that the system can operate safely whilst being robust to attacks. Second, how can one develop a strong tamper-resistant trail of recorded activity to enable system forensics that will withstand hostile scrutiny in a court of law. Indeed, significant liabilities are involved when connected IoT devices such assurgical robots make errors induced by cyberattacks or otherwise. This PhD will investigate the implications of robot safety assurance on security, managing stochastic interference, and attacks on machine-learning components (AI). The candidate will be expected to work in close collaboration with other members of the security group and industry partners. The industry partners are leading producers of medical equipment.
The security group at Strathclyde has seven full time academics. The group aims to develop a cohort of students with expertise in systems security with links to statistics, psychology, human behaviour, and economics. The group has a thriving PhD program with 29 current PhD students working on Privacy Technologies, Cybercrime measurement, Malware, Anonymity, Machine learning, and Industrial IoT security.
