Supervisors: - Professor Xianghua Xie, Department of Computer Science, Swansea University - Dr Christopher Hague, Tata Steel Research & Development
The Department of Computer Science at Swansea University invites applications for a Four-Year fully funded PhD studentship, jointly funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (under the “Industrial CASE” scheme) and Tata Steel.
Advances in scientific and technical approaches have transformed modern manufacturing in recent decades. With the rapid progress in artificial intelligence, particularly with sophisticated machine learning models that are capable of matching or even surpassing human performances in data-intensive tasks, successful deployment, integration, and development of AI in manufacturing are increasingly important in improving productivity, quality, and cost efficiency. In steel manufacturing, strip surface properties are crucial for quality control. They directly impact press performance and product appearance. In this studentship project, we aim to develop novel machine learning and computer vision techniques to create new method for steel surface property quantification. This will produce much more reliable surface data for both process control and product release, at much faster speed than current state of the art.
Applicants will need to show experience in (a combination of) the following skills:
- Proficient programming skills, e.g. python - Good understanding or relevant experience in computer vision and machine learning fundamentals - Good mathematical background
Eligibility Candidates should have a first class degree or a Master’s degree with Merit, in a relevant discipline.
For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. Please visit our website for a list of acceptable English language tests. We prefer candidates to have already met the English Language requirements at the point of application, although this is not a requirement.
Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only
This is a four-year fully funded EPSRC CASE scholarship, which covers UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,285.
