Tata Steel Europe (TSE) is the second largest producer of pre-painted steel in Europe. To maintain this position, the organisation is constantly trying to improve the current product range, either through the development of best in class coatings for the construction industry, improved offerings in service or through added functionality.

Background:

Tata Steel Europe (TSE) is the second largest producer of pre-painted steel in Europe. To maintain this position, the organisation is constantly trying to improve the current product range, either through the development of best in class coatings for the construction industry, improved offerings in service or through added functionality.

Tata’s premium coated products can offer maintenance free warranties of up to 40 years and this technology is based on decades of experience. Recently, Tata Steel Colors UK have invested in manufacturing capability that can produce 3 paint layers in a single pass. Through the use of innovative clear coat technology, market leading products can be produced. To continue developing these products, the use of an automotive clear coat layer that has been formulated for use on our manufacturing process for the construction market is desired. Such an innovative clear coat will need to be fully assessed in terms of physical properties, but also via accelerated tests, natural weathering, and forensic analysis of the formulated product.

Project Aims:

- Work in conjunction with key paint suppliers to fully understand the current paint formulation

- Use gained knowledge of suppliers who can offer clear coat technology to specify how to formulate a polymer that can be run on our manufacturing line with the required properties

- Evaluate the mechanisms and rates of coating degradation and erosion of the produced clear coat formulation via external and accelerated testing, UV, ATR-FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy

Eligibility
We welcome applications from candidates with an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree (minimum level 2:1), or a combination of degree and equivalent experience to the same level.

Normally, we would expect candidates to have met the University’s English Language requirements (e.g. IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5+ in each component) by point of application. Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only.

Funding Notes

The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend of £20,000 p.a. for a period of four years.
