In 2019, the Llanwern ZODIAC galvanising line will conduct its first development trials to declare its capability in manufacturing a MgZn metallic coated steel, currently branded under the Tata Steel trade name, MagiZinc. This is an important development for the automotive manufacturing sector, with respect to light weighting, improved durability and reduction of emissions.
This programme provides new research opportunities for Tata operations within South Wales, in that relationships of influencing parameters on final product quality and performance are not fully understood, including upstream operations, hot mill practices and incoming surface roughness. This is an exciting opportunity to create impact in both steel and automotive sectors.
The Research Engineer will: • Support Tata Steel Strip UK MagiZinc development programme on ZODIAC; • Investigate the relationship between processing parameters and subsequent product quality, including surface appearance for full-finish automotive applications; • Assess the difference in product performance between MgZn coated steel and conventional Hot Dip Galvanized Steel I.e. susceptibility for Liquid Metal Embrittlement.
Eligibility We welcome applications from candidates with an Engineering or Physical Science degree (minimum level 2:1), or a combination of degree and equivalent relevant experience to the same level, to join the M2A community of research engineers.
Please visit our website for more information on eligibility.
The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a tax free stipend of £20,000 p.a. for a period of four years.
