About the Project

Applications are sought from highly motivated individuals looking to develop an emerging sensing technique using terahertz spectroscopy to characterise the structural domains of industrially relevant coated membranes in electrochemical devices. Deployment of this emerging technique could potentially enable high volume manufacturing, accelerating the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell/electrolyser technologies, which are expected to play a significant role in the future low-carbon economy.

The post holder will characterise and develop coated membranes using terahertz sensing [1, 2] supported by a suite of complementary techniques. Other responsibilities include:

• Membrane preparation and synthesis.

• Modelling of coated membrane morphology and electromagnetic response.

• Comprehensive investigations using state-of-the-art techniques at Johnson Matthey.

• Publication of journal and conference papers.

• Attending and presenting at conferences.

• Attending internal and collaborator meetings and other duties, such as proposal writing, as required.

Candidates must have a relevant degree at 2.1 minimum or an equivalent overseas degree in Applied physics, Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science, with demonstrated interests in clean and sustainable energy. Non-UK students are welcomed to apply. Overseas applicants should submit IELTS results (minimum 6.5) if applicable.

Funding Notes

This project is funded by Lancaster University. The studentship will cover UK fees plus the standard maintenance stipend (fees paid, stipend at UKRI rates, currently £17,668 p.a. tax free). The School of Engineering also has two studentships which cover Overseas fees which this award may be eligible for. The successful candidate could start in October 2023.
