Project Description

This scholarship is funded by Swansea University’s College of Engineering.

Subject areas: Nanotechnology, Engineering, Electrochemistry, Spectroscopy, Chemistry, Materials Science

Project description:
A batteries performance is dependent on the properties of the materials used. The use of nanotechnology has advanced technology to produce high power and high energy density devices but these are not without there challenges. Nanoparticle beam deposition represents a radical new approach to the environmentally friendly synthesis of nanoparticles for energy storage. The method is solvent- and thus effluent-free and avoids toxic salts, and satisfies the growing demand for sustainable manufacturing of advanced materials. The Nanomaterials Lab at Swansea is world leader in the scale up of this approach from the microgram level to the gram+ level, enabling frontier R&D of great interest to chemical companies. This project will develop materials for battery applications using nanoparticle beam deposition in conjunction with the development of advanced in situcharacterisation methods to analyse the underlying factors that govern the properties of energy storage devices.

Project supervisors: Dr I M Aldous

Available resources/facilities: 4 nanocluster beam sources, high resolution TEM, XPS and SPM
