About the Project

We are inviting applicants for a fully-funded PhD studentship at the University of Sussex in the field of soft and compliant robots. Interested candidates should get in touch with Dr. Nicolas Herzig ([Email Address Removed]) with their up-to-date CV and a cover letter. The PhD project is as follows:

Fluid powered Compliant and Soft robotics (Contact: Dr. Nicolas Herzig)

Compliant and soft robots are excellent candidates to tackle challenges in Human-Robot-Environment interactions. Thanks to their compliance they can safely interact with their environment and adapt to uncertainties. This makes compliant and soft robotic devices particularly suitable in medical applications, exploration of extreme environments and collaborative industrial manufacturing. The PhD project will focus on the design, modelling and control of fluid powered robots and robotic devices. Following a Mechatronics approach, you will design novel compliant and soft robotic devices and develop dedicated control strategies that take advantage of their compliance.

Eligibility and Requirements

The key requirements are as follows:

  • A minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree and/or a postgraduate masters degree in a STEM subject is required. Background in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, materials or electrical engineering will be suitable.
  • Previous experience in soft robotics, soft elastic materials, or hands-on development of robots/mechatronic systems or fluid powered systems will be considered advantageous.
  • Due to the interdisciplinarity of the research topics, interest and ability to learn new subjects is essential.

Funding: Tax-free stipend of ~£15,609 per annum + fees is available for 3.5 years with additional pay for teaching duties. The candidate is expected to start in January 2022. The deadline for submitting your application is 15th October, 2021.
