Functional significance of IL-1B in breast cancer bone metastases

Project Description

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and leading cause of death in women worldwide. Up to 75% of patients with advanced breast cancer develop bone metastases and patients with this condition have a median survival of around 2-3 years. We have recently identified Interleukin 1B (IL-1B) as a potential biomarker for identifying breast cancer patients who are likely to develop metastatic bone disease. Furthermore, we have identified upregulation of IL-1B and it’s receptor IL-1R1 in breast cancer cells that metastasise to bone compared with cells that do not metastasise. This project aims to use breast cancer and bone cells genetically manipulated to express IL-1B, IL-1R1 or both to identify the functional role of these molecules in bone metastasis. In addition, this project will use in vivo models of bone metastasis to establish the efficacy of using targeted anti- IL-1B treatments in combination with current standard of care drugs for breast cancer as potential novel treatments for bone metastasis.

Funding:
Self funding (tuition fees plus £12,000 per year consumables)

Entry Requirements:
Candidates must have a first or upper second class honors degree or significant research experience.
