About the Project

Imperial College are inviting applications for a PhD position to join an exciting new Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Prosperity Partnership between Imperial, UCL and Eli Lilly on Transforming synthetic drug manufacturing: novel processes, methods and tools. This multi million pound partnership over five years combines expertise from academia and the pharmaceutical industry to develop novel processes, methods and tools to significantly reduce the time and cost of producing new drugs,speeding up new treatments for patients for a range of conditions.
The PhD researcher will contribute to a comprehensive research programme which draws upon expertise and advances in the manufacture of small molecules to enable radical progress on the synthetic manufacture of much larger peptide drugs. He/she will be part of a team that explores the interactions between design, manufacturing and the physical stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients and their formulations. The team will undertake experimental analysis of physical and chemical stability in a model GI tract using leading edge experimental techniques.

This is an exciting opportunity for outstanding candidates to join a highly prestigious programme and work with Eli Lilly to deliver research outcomes which aim to break down barriers to the cost and time-effective manufacturing of synthetic drugs.

The successful PhD candidate will need to possess, or expect to obtain, a First Class Honours degree at Master’s level (or equivalent) in chemical engineering, another branch of engineering or a related science.

The PhD studentship will cover tuition fees and an annual stipend for 42 months, starting no later than October 2020.


Funding Notes

There are residence requirements for research council funding for postgraduate research. Normally, to be eligible for a full award a student must have no restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship (with some further constraint regarding residence for education).

However for exceptional candidates this requirement may be lifted.
