Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
Microplastics are ubiquitous contaminants in aquatic and terrestrial environments, and have recently been discovered in the atmosphere in several megacities and remote locations throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Sources of microplastics include paint particles, microbeads, clothing fibers and dust from synthetic rubber tyres. Due to their size and density they can be transported by the wind and persist in the atmosphere for extended periods.
We are seeking a PhD student to work within a wider effort aimed at quantifying the role of airborne microplastics in the global climate system. The focus of this PhD project will be on measuring airborne microplastics in New Zealand by undertaking field studies in the North and South Island of New Zealand, and laboratory analyses. The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in chemistry, environmental science or a related discipline. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are essential, as is a valid New Zealand driver’s licence (or ability to obtain one prior to the start of the project).
This studentship is fully funded for three years and will be jointly supported by Dr Laura Revell and Associate Professor Sally Gaw at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. The successful candidate will be based in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, who offer a friendly and supportive environment and are housed in a brand-new purpose-built research facility. This project will provide opportunities to travel nationally and internationally.
To apply, please submit the following:
- Cover letter (including preferred start date and ability to obtain a valid New Zealand driver’s licence).
- CV describing previous research, laboratory and programming experience.
- Academic transcript.
- Evidence of proficiency in English, if applying from outside New Zealand.
- Contact details of two academic referees.
