Project Description

Applications are invited on the theme described below, as part of The University of Sheffield’s Communications Research Group and the Advanced Radio Technology Centre.
In this research project, we have interest in novel aspects within the following broad themes:-
• Passive Radar using ‘Signals of Opportunity’, such as broadcast TV and FM radio signals as sources of Radar illumination
• Antenna beam forming and scanning with low complexity hardware (including Time Modulated Arrays)
• Wide-area distributed receive or transmit node architectures for Radar systems
• High performance, cost-effective and compact Radar systems
• Waveform signal design and signal processing
• Low energy & complexity DSP algorithms for the detection of RF Radar signals

There are many aspects of contemporary Radar and Tracking systems that can benefit from the latest hardware and algorithm research in mobile communications technologies. We would like to explore one or more of the above themes at RF frequencies from VHF to X band.
Researchers can expect to become involved in designing novel hardware and software for their proposed system(s) and then trialling and optimising them in both laboratory and field trial scenarios. The expectation is that the researcher’s project will contribute to a Radar / Tracking test bed, to be developed at the University.
The position is available immediately and will be open until it is filled.
