About the Project

If you find the idea of working as part of a major UK research consortium working together to tackle major energy-sector challenges, read on.

In this project you’ll use world-leading radiation facilities at the Dalton Cumbrian Facility to look at production of gaseous hydrogen and oxygen on uranium and thorium oxide surfaces. You will use a range of analytical techniques to determine the amounts of each gas produced under various conditions. The changes induced to the surfaces will also be examined analytically. As well as having obvious relevance to the nuclear power industry, the processes under study are relevant to the splitting of water at oxide surfaces and hence to the development of a future hydrogen-storage energy economy. Interested candidates will also have the opportunity to model the processes taking place to further the depth of understanding.
The opportunity to work closely with leaders from the relevant industrial sector in an area with a major skill shortage will ensure someone completing a successful project many exciting career opportunities.

The Dalton Cumbrian Facility values co-operation and inclusivity while offering unparalleled access to a diverse expertise base. You’ll receive training on the particle accelerator systems and analytical equipment and may also be required to travel to Manchester, or other locations, to undertake further training.

The main focus of the research activity will take place at the Dalton Cumbrian Facility so, whilst the successful applicant will be expected to be based there, they should also be prepared to travel both to the central University of Manchester campus and elsewhere for meetings, visitor experiments etc.

To be eligible you must hold, or expect to attain, a minimum of 2:1 in a science or engineering discipline.

Funding Notes

This is a 3 year funded studentship which covers tuition fees and a stipend at the standard RCUK rate (£14,777 in 2018).

We expect the PhD to start in September 2019.
