About the Project

(1 position available)

Tutors: Liberato Manna, Milena Arciniegas

This research activity will be focused on the fabrication and characterization of novel 2D layered perovskite nanomaterials, with a deep understanding of their crystallographic and electronic structures for potential application in switchable optoelectronics. The candidate will be working first on the synthesis of such materials by using friendly solvents and targeting Pb-free metal-halide structures. He/she will explore different organic molecules and investigate their effect on the photophysics of the resulting crystals, as well, as their tunability through, for example, temperature, electrical current, and mechanical stress. Additional complexity on these tasks will be added by controlling the material architecture and deposition in films by using mechanical exfoliation and thin film deposition techniques. The candidate will work intensively on in situ structural characterization such as x-ray diffraction, electron and atomic force microscopy. Within this highly interdisciplinary experimental project the student will acquire knowledge on different advanced techniques for nanomaterials and tools for their fabrication. She/he is expected to work independently but in strong collaborations with other researchers.

Requirements:

The student should have a degree in materials science, engineering or physics, with a strong interest in chemistry, experimental designs, and photophysics of nanomaterials.
