Genome-wide assessment of host genes that are essential for cytomegalovirus infection

The Systems Immunity University Research Institute (SIURI) offers 4-year training courses in an internationally-recognised research environment that encompasses infection, immunity, inflammation, bioinformatics and cancer research (http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/research/systems-immunity). The aim of the SIURI is to combine experimental, clinical and bioinformatics approaches to understand the systems that are involved in the immune system and disease.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a pathogenic herpesvirus that causes significant morbidity and mortality in children following congenital infection, and in immune suppressed adults. Understanding how this virus exploits and manipulates the cells in which it replicates will inform the design of next-generation antiviral therapies.

The project will encompass a combination of cutting-edge techniques such as CRISPR genome editing and proteomics, with molecular virology and cellular immunology to identify pathways that are targeted by HCMV during replication
