About the Project

The Global Open Finance Centre of Excellence (GOFCoE) has a mission to unlock the power of financial data to improve lives. An obvious obstacle to using financial data—particularly, personal financial data—for broader public benefit is that banking and similar data is naturally regarded by people as sensitive and private, meaning that accessing such data even to obtain aggregate statistical insights can be difficult or impossible.

There is increasing interest in the possibility of using synthetic data generation to ameliorate these problems. Generically, where real data describes real events, people and entities, synthetic data describes artificial events, people and entities and is generated in a way that mimics the behaviour of the real ones while preserving the privacy of any people/entities whose data may be used during the training or configuration phase of synthetic data generation. This includes not only synthesis of single tables, but of linked datasets, e.g. multiple accounts and transactions, and possibly even simulation of data across multiple organizations or domains.
