Project Description

Introduction and Background
The UK was one of the first countries to adopt nuclear power, and we are also the first to decommission our legacy “Magnox” reactor fleet. This PhD project is an opportunity to be at the forefront of nuclear cleanup efforts, an important societal need. You will help inform the decommissioning strategy of these reactors by producing new inspection systems to characterise the inside of these reactors.

Two PhD projects are available, focussed on separate challenges: (i) characterisation and processing of irradiated core graphite and (ii) remote inspection of reactor internals.

Collaboration
You will work alongside academics and industrial collaborators, using cutting-edge equipment and facilities, with visits and trial deployments at Magnox sites across the UK. You will investigate techniques for characterisation and carry out deployments of your instruments inside Magnox nuclear reactors.

Objectives
1. Develop working robotic inspection systems to characterise the inside of the UK’s Magnox reactor fleet.
2. Produce data pertaining to the inside of these reactors, contributing to the Magnox decommissioning strategy.
