The transformation group theory of manifolds is an old but active topic in modern mathematics. The project focus on the existence of matrix groups in the topological homeomorphism groups of typical manifolds. It is related to the Zimmer’s program studying actions of high-rank irreducible lattices in Lie groups on lower dimensional manifolds. Through this project, the students are expected to acquire knowledge on algebraic topology, differential geometry, dynamical system and algebraic geometry.
