Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
Interested in developing your clinical academic career in the care of older people and work alongside professionally qualified academics and senior clinicians in older persons care? Then this could be the opportunity you have been looking for. This prestigious PhD studentship is part funded by NIHR Wessex Applied Research Collaboration, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and Bournemouth University.
Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust has a successful track record in innovative clinical responses to the needs of older people living with frailty. This is an opportunity for ambitious candidates wishing to develop a clinical academic career. The student will be funded over four years, working closely with academic and practice partners.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to develop your clinical academic profile by completing a full-time PhD over 4 years. The 4 year programme will consist of working 3 days a week on the PhD and 2 days a week in clinical practice over 4 years. This is ideally suited for those who wish to retain or develop their professional practice skills whilst undertaking a PhD study. Applicants must have a UK registered health professional qualification.
Older people with frailty can experience unmet needs and poor outcomes as a result of poor continuity and coordination of care, suggesting that responsiveness of existing health and social care can be low. Integrated care, is proposed as a strategy to improve outcomes for older people with frailty, yet the impact of integrated care on improving patient and service outcomes for older people with frailty is equivocal. Integrated care could be one way that health care responsiveness is achieved. Indeed, we might measure the success of integrated care by evaluating its responsiveness to individual needs and expectations. However, we understand little about the wider health system conditions shaping the extent to which integrated care can align to, and dynamically respond to individual need.
The project therefore aims to explore the relationship between health system responsiveness and the implementation of integrated care for older people with frailty to develop a framework to improve the implementation of person centred integrated care, for future feasibility testing. An innovative mixed methods design will be used in this proposed PhD project.
This studentship will provide the successful candidate with a wide range of training opportunities. At the completion of the study, the student will have had training in and experience of systematic literature reviewing, mixed methods research techniques, ethnographic and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, co-design approaches with multiple stakeholders.
This will be a demanding project that will require a dedicated student, though they will benefit from close support and guidance from a dedicated and enthusiastic research team. So, if you think you have what it takes to be a part of this state of the art research, this will be a great opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives.
