About the Project

The UN has announced that 2021-30 is the decade of healthy ageing and the UK Government has identified the ageing population as one of its Grand Challenges, aiming to ensure that people can enjoy at least five extra healthy, independent years of life by 2035. The WHO Age-Friendly Cities and Communities agenda has acted as a framework for the development of cities and communities that enable social participation, independent and ageing-in-place. Yet interventions have often assumed a one-size fits all approach to ageing populations, without understanding how experiences of healthy ageing and place differ across urban, social and cultural contexts and taking into account the heterogeneity of ageing across age, disability, gender and ethnicity. Intersectionality approaches have been identified as a potential way forward to understanding how multiple and overlapping positions/identities can impact healthy ageing outcomes. This PhD will seek to explore experiences of intersectionality and ageing across different urban environments, and should draw upon relevant theoretical frameworks of e.g. environmental gerontology and life course perspectives. The PhD will fit within existing collaborations and work that the lead Ryan Woolrych has developed via the PLACE-AGE research project https://wp.ufpel.edu.br/placeageproject/en/index-2/. Methodological approaches can be wide ranging but would expect to engage with experiential, mobile and/or visual methods, as well as more participatory forms of engagement with older people, the voluntary and community sector, service providers and local government.
