Project Description

This is an exciting PhD opportunity to work will various companies throughout Europe. Applications are invited for one full-time PhD studentship funded by the EU at Brunel University London. Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend of £16,553 plus payment of their full-time home/EU tuition fees, £4,260 per annum, for a period of 36 months. Partial scholarships are provided for international students with funding up to £20,813 per annum for three years. International fees for 2018/19 are £18,000 per annum. The studentship will commence ASAP.

BCAST is a specialty research institute focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the Future LiME Research Hub). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and materials processing. The LightMe Project is an €11M EU Horizon 2020 project that involves over 20 partners throughout Europe. The successful candidate for this position will work in a larger team on the development of a pilot line for high pressure die cast aluminium and magnesium nanocomposite components. The research will focus on modelling and numerical simulation. This will require model development to adapt the existing casting models to the specific properties and solidification behaviour of nanocomposites. The work will also include: (1) modification of the pilot line to produce industrial scale castings; (2) optimisation of the casting process (3) evaluation of the mechanical properties of the final components. He/she will also be expected to work collaboratively with other members of the research group, and collaborate with and travel to other partners throughout Europe in order to contribute to the success of the project.

Funding Notes

Successful candidates are required to have a first degree at or equivalent to 2:1 or above in a suitable engineering discipline, e.g. mechanical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, chemistry, physics, etc. A Master’s level qualification is desirable but not essential. Experience in numerical modelling, processing of metallic materials, skills in microstructural characterisation using various microscopy techniques and a working knowledge of mechanical testing of metallic materials is an advantage. In addition, he/she should be highly motivated, able to work in a team and have good communication skills.
