About the Project

This PhD is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Materials for Demanding Environments [M4DE CDT]; it is sponsored by Cellbond. and will commence September 2018.

Background
Precise material characterisation of rubbers for high strain rate applications in crash test dummies is very important for both upgrading the current generation of dummies and the development of newer, more advanced models. The key challenges lie in identifying the link between bulk material behaviour and the influence of the manufacturing process on the performance of the finished product. Materials in crash test dummies are deployed in environments that present not only physical demands, but extreme demands for reliability and scientific accuracy.

Project Outline
On this project you will characterise the rubbers used for specific parts of crash test dummies using innovative experimental techniques and advanced numerical analysis. You will develop tailored mathematical material models that can be used with commercial software packages which will aid in the design of future generations of crash test dummy. You will also examine the influence of manufacturing techniques on the performance of components fabricated from synthetic rubbers, leading to the development of more reliable and accurate crash test dummy components. As part of your research, you will be offered numerous opportunities to spend time working with the sponsor, learning and applying their cutting edge techniques and witnessing first-hand the industrial application of your research.
