About the Project

Urban trees provide numerous environmental quality and human health benefits, including removal of air pollution and urban climate regulation. Sound statistical methodologies are required to assess the uncertainties in the estimated number of trees. The project will develop random plot selection methods, for towns and cities ranging from Petersfield to Southampton. A detailed study of the prevailing landscape will be used to draw up a high resolution map, including air quality zones and road networks. Clustering and simulation based statistical methods will be used to determine the sampling plots.

Funding Notes

The studentship has been funded by the Scottish Forestry Trust, Forestry Commission, Forest Research and the University of Southampton.

Funding will cover Home/EU fees for 3years as well as a stipend in line with the Research Council Doctoral stipend level (£15,009 p.a. for 2019/20). International students may apply but they will be liable to pay rest of the fees at overseas student rate.
