Project Detail
The 21st century is experiencing unprecedented urban expansion due to population growth and migration. This, along with climate change and changes in rainfall patterns has resulted in the growing challenge of urban surface water flooding. Traditional approaches to urban design and particularly drainage systems are not appropriate for the 21st Century. Therefore, sustainable alternatives need to be developed, known as Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) or Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI).

How we balance the day to day functions of urban spaces i.e. economic productivity, health and wellbeing of users, with the need for flood resilience when it is needed is poorly understood, in terms of town planning. The impacts of SuDS, including urban green space, on mitigating flood risk, along with other ecosystem services are highly uncertain, especially at the development and city scales. This project will focus on upscaling the impacts of individual BGI to larger spatial scales, investigating the synergies between BGI assets using both field experiments and numerical models.

Applicants will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Geography, Engineering, Architecture or Town Planning, or Environmental Science. A Master’s degree and/or experience in a related area associated with the research will be an advantage.

Funding Notes

The studentship is for 3.5 years and is intended to start in October 2019. The studentship provides a tax free stipend of £14,777 per annum (in 2018/19) for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (£4,260 in 2018/19) and a research training support grant of £8,000.
