How will climate change and natural enemies affect non-native plant invasion risk in Arctic Norway?

Project Description

Invasions represent a major component of global environmental change, and invasive plants can have important impacts of ecosystem function. In Arctic Norway, strong warming effects of climate change have the potential to make the climate more suitable for non-native to establish and invade resident ecosystems in the next few decades. However, a warmer climate may also increase rates of herbivory by insects and pathogen impacts. It is unclear if such increases in natural enemies will affect native and non-native plants equally, or if non-natives will have a greater advantage over natives in a warming climate through non-native enemy release and greater enemy attack for natives. This project provides a unique opportunity to understand the combined effects of natural enemies and climate change on plant performance, which is crucial to forecasting future invasion risk by non-native plants in the Arctic.

The candidate will obtain training in species distribution modelling, invasion ecology, mixed modelling, and skills and experience in experimentally quantifying plant-soil feedbacks, common garden experiments and field observations of plant traits, natural enemies and their impacts on plants.

Funding Notes

Durham Arctic Leverhulme Studentship, 3 years if successful.
This project is in competition with others for funding. Success will depend on the quality of applications received, relative to those for competing projects.
