Project Description

This research is to investigate strategies to achieve safe human-robot collaboration on manufacturing tasks such as composite layup of complex products. The PhD will investigate methods of digitizing human actions during these complex operations as well as methods of intelligently extracting activities that can be automated for robotic operation. One way of doing this is through the use or development of machine learning algorithms. It will also investigate how to achieve task based communication between humans and robots so that collaborative working can be achieved during these complex manufacturing processes.

This work will be carried out in collaboration with the renowned University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) including the AMRC’s £43 million state-of-the-art ‘Factory 2050’ - the UK’s first fully reconfigurable assembly and component manufacturing research facility.

Funding Notes

Applicants can apply for a Scholarship from the University of Sheffield but should note that competition for these Scholarships is highly competitive. it will be possible to make Scholarship applications from the Autumn with a strict deadline in late January 2018.
