About the Project
Obtaining planning permission to build new overhead high voltage AC lines is very difficult and getting permission to build new lines in urban areas is practically impossible.
HVDC is a technology that could be used to transmit significant power into load centres (large cities) using cables as the issues of charging current loading of the cables that is present on AC systems does not occur on HVDC links.
Rail corridors could provide a useful route for HVDC cables into load centres but little is known about the compatibility of HVDC power links and the power & signalling systems of rail lines.
This project would investigate the potential coupling between the power and rail systems, suggest mitigations and provide input into guidelines.
Funding Notes
This project is funded by EPSRC, the University of Manchester and our Industry partners. Funding is available to UK candidates. EU candidates are also eligible if they have been studying or working continuously in the UK for three or more years (prior to the start date of the programme). The successful candidates will have their fees paid in full and will receive an enhanced maintenance stipend.
