Robert Gordon University, through the School of Engineering is offering a PhD studentship with tuition fees funded for Home/EU or International applicants.
This is a fees-only funded PhD studentship provided by the School of Engineering and interested candidates will have to secure their own financial support to upkeep their living costs.
Demand for electricity is continuously increasing worldwide, and owing to scarcity of conventional energy resources and the environmental concerns it, inevitably, leads to adoption of renewable alternatives. Therefore, new generating plants are built, interconnecting AC and DC lines are being established, and energy management techniques are being employed.
This project provides an exciting opportunity to work on the challenges within the emerging integrated AC/DC Grids. The inherent difference in the operation, control and protection of the AC and DC networks and the intermittent nature of the renewable energy together bring challenges in stability and optimal operation of such integrated AC/DC systems. In addition, the increasing penetration of electrified transportation adds to grid uncertainty. Therefore, a comprehensive study of these integrated hybrid systems is essential given the potential cost and consequence of system failure.
The objective of this project is to conduct a novel investigation into operational scenarios that arise in terms of reliability and optimal operation to arrive at solutions through modelling and simulation based on customised networks and standard benchmarks. The applicability of the existing techniques and their enhancements will be analysed and, hence, new algorithms and solutions will be proposed to address the challenges within the emerging integrated AC/DC Grids.

The candidate should possess a Master’s or 1st Class Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Control Engineering. Having a research record or experience of AC/DC power systems modelling, microgrids, optimization, reliability analysis, and renewables is advantageous. Competency in Matlab/Simulink is essential
This studentship will cover the tuition fees only. Living costs and expenses are self-funded by the applicant.
