The Project:
Talent is spread equally across the UK, but opportunity is not. This gives rise to economic inequalities for both individuals and organisations. The goal of the UK government’s ‘Levelling Up’ agenda is to end geographic inequality.1 Its success relies on the development and enhancement of business opportunities in areas outside London and the Southeast of England, particularly in the North and Midlands.
One potential obstacle in this mission is the stigmatisation of some organisations (Devers et al., 2009) which may inhibit their ability to become more innovative, increase pay, and grow. In particular, the location of organisations may give rise to a form of stigma (Cowden et al., 2022) that inhibits the achievement of the levelling up goals.
The aim of this project is to explore organisational stigma in the context of location. Some potential avenues would be: (a) to understand and measure organisational locational stigma and how this manifests across the stigmatised organisation’s customers, suppliers, and competitors; (b) to determine whether organisational locational stigma affects the stigmatised organisation’s performance; (c) to explore the extent to which linkages with other organisations (such as universities and research centres) are affected due to organisational locational stigma; and (d) whether stigmatised organisations have equal opportunities in governmental support.
