Ice Sheets from the cloud: Developing cloud computing solutions for big data challenges in satellite Earth Observation

Project Description

Accurate satellite monitoring of Greenland and Antarctica is one of the most important challenges for understanding sea-level rise. Recent years have seen an explosion in satellite data volumes, due to new missions and technology. These vast datasets hold the potential for fundamental new insights into ice sheet evolution, yet demand a shift towards powerful and sophisticated cloud-based computing.

This project will develop a world-leading, cloud-based system for processing high-volume polar altimetry data; the first UK facility of its kind. With a focus on software and systems design, you will address key scientific and technical challenges; system parallelization, platform neutrality and robust uncertainty estimation, thereby setting a new global benchmark in polar Earth Observation.
The project offers the exciting opportunity to work with experts in cloud-computing, data science and geodesy. You will join the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, with opportunities to work with the European Space Agency.

Funding Notes

Full studentships (UK/EU tuition fees and stipend (£15,009 2019/20 [tax free])) for UK/EU students for 3.5 years. Unfortunately funding is not available for International (non EU) students.

This project is particularly well-suited to applicants with a background in computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, physics or engineering, who would like to make the step towards applied study in the fields of environmental science, climate science and geophysics. Applications should hold the minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level or equivalent.
