Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing global healthcare problem. Clinical findings suggest that more than 70% of patients with T2DM will die of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including heart attack and stroke. While poor control of blood glucose levels is a reliable predictor of susceptibility to CVD and increased risk of thrombosis in diabetic patients, the molecular mechanisms responsible are unknown. We propose that protein O-GlcNAcylation, a glucose-dependent modification that links diabetes to protein function, enhances thrombus formation through post-translational modification of key platelet proteins. Using cutting edge biochemical and pharmacological approaches the student will A) Apply new biochemical tools to isolate O-GlcNAcylated proteins from human platelets, B) Identify O-GlcNAcylated proteins enriched in platelets from T2DM patients, and C) Use biochemical approaches to validate and characterise the effects of target protein O-GlcNAcylation on function..

In order to qualify for this position, you will require an undergraduate degree with at least a 2.1, or equivalent, in a relevant subject (Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Pharmacology, Pharmacy or related discipline). English Language IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6 in all components.
