About the Project

In our previous research we systematically investigated 250 prescription medications to identify medications associated with cancer risk using a Scottish General Practice database. In this project we will attempt to replicate some of the findings from our screening study.

In this study we will determine whether associations identified between medications and cancer risk from an earlier screening study are apparent in an independent dataset. The project will involve statistical analysis of routinely collected patient data. A nested case-control study will be conducted to estimate the association between a candidate medication and cancer risk. Cases with cancer will be identified. Controls will be matched to cases using age, gender, year and GP practice. Prescription usage will be determined for both cases and controls. Conditional logistic regression will be used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) comparing the risk of cancer among users with non-users adjusting for comorbidity and lifestyle confounders. The study has the potential to identify medications which increase cancer risk and consequently alter licensing and usage of these medications.
