Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
An opportunity is available for a highly motivated PhD candidate to pursue interdisciplinary research investigating local and systemic immune responses to human respiratory tract bacteria, and how this impacts the development of allergic sensitization and asthma. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways associated with airway hyper-responsiveness and airflow obstruction that affects approximately 1 in 10 people worldwide. Up to 10% of these patients suffer a severe, neutrophilic form of disease that is refractory to steroid therapy. Recent evidence supports a role for the host microbiota in regulating allergic sensitization and airway inflammation; however, the precise immunopathogenic mechanisms by which bacteria mediate these effects are unclear. This project will employ in vitro and in vivo models to investigate discrete mechanisms by which a range of bacteria that commonly colonise the human respiratory tract shape the immune response to allergen exposure and allergic airway disease.
Applicants should have a BSc or MSc in microbiology or immunology, or related disciplines. Candidates must have keen interest in host-microbe interactions in health and disease. They should be self-driven and possess strong organisational skills with the ability to produce results and prioritise tasks. Ideally, applicants will have laboratory experience in bacterial culture, cellular immunology, and/or rodent models of disease.
