Complicated document means the document with either complicated foreground (e.g., flexible handwriting styles, complicated layout) or complicated background (e.g., scene texts). It is challenging to recognize these documents, where the traditional optical character recognition (OCR) techniques often fail. On the other hand, human can easily read documents because we can fully utilize multi-modal information in the recognition, including the image information and contextual text information. Based on our solid foundation on deep learning, OCR and context models, the objective of this project is to investigate how to improve complex document recognition by using multi-modal analysis, including searching multiple related information, building multiple context models and integrating multiple models in the recognition system. These techniques are useful for a variety of applications, e.g., the digitization of paper-based archives and scene understanding by the recognition of scene text.
