About the Project

There are 894,851 refugee children and young people living in the UK (UNICEF 2022). Currently conflict is escalating in Ukraine and millions of children are in immediate danger. Recently the UK PM vowed the UK will take Ukrainian refugees. Many will be children in need of psychological support, as refugee children experience various types of traumas before, during and after their migration journey. However, research shows that maintaining engagement with both screening and therapeutic health services is challenging mainly due to lack of specialised interpreters used in provision of health services (Sojka and Jolly 2019, 2020, 2022; Portnoy and Ward 2020). Furthermore, most of the interpreters working with refugee children and young people in the UK have not received specific training (Armitage et al. 2021) posing additional barriers for children communicating their stories.

We welcome your research ideas that should aim to deepen academic, policy and practice understandings of use of formal and informal interpreters when providing support of the emotional, mental and wellbeing needs of refugee children and young people living in the UK. We are particularly interested in professionals wishing to pursue relevant research, and those from underrepresented groups.

The complete application should include a project proposal (not exceeding four A4 sides) including background, aims, and an outline of how those aims will be addressed referenced appropriately (the reference list is in addition to the four A4 sides).
