Project Description

Strengthening and/or repair of deficient steel bridges is an application of significant economic and strategic importance. In 2012/13, the Highways Agency (currently Highways England) spent over 37% of its expenditure on the maintenance of the UK strategic road network, which comprises hundreds of steel bridges. Steel bridges require strengthening and/or repair due to increased traffic loads, natural or man-made extreme events (e.g. earthquakes, impacts), harsh environmental conditions, and/or poor initial design. The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites can be an excellent strengthening solution due to their high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio, ease of application, and environmental resistance.

We are looking for outstanding Doctoral Researchers with exceptionally strong relevant academic background to investigate, experimentally and numerically, new techniques for enhancing the sustainability and resilience of existing steel bridges. This is a demanding research project with strong potential for real life applications. Successful candidates must demonstrate enthusiasm, can-do attitude and strong skills in physical testing and/or nonlinear finite element analysis of steel structures. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant track record of research, including journal publications.
