Project description

Aluminum-ion (Al-ion) batteries, offer lower cost more abundant electrode materials, higher thermal stability and higher theoretical energy density than lithium-ion batteries. Al-ion batteries are not yet well characterized, with only a few publications, mainly focusing on individual electrodes. Using an aqueous electrolyte offers cost, recycling and chemical handling advantages over other proposed Al-ion chemistries and conventional Li-ion batteries. This PhD will involve the development of test rigs for in-situ battery analysis at ISIS neutron diffraction facilities along with interpretation of experimental data to elucidate the reaction mechanism for the aqueous Al-ion battery system.

This PhD project will be funded jointly by the Faraday Institute and STFC. The Faraday Institution Cluster PhD students receive an enhanced stipend over and above the standard EPSRC offer. The total annual stipend is approximately £20,000 (plus London weighting) plus an additional £7,000 annually to cover training and travel costs. Recipients will have access to multiple networking opportunities, industry visits, mentorship, internships, as well as quality experiences that will further develop knowledge, skills, and aspirations.

Entry Requirements
A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 August 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.
