About the Project

We seek applications to research the question of how indigenous organisations in the North work at multiple levels from the local to the international stage. In particular we would like to invite applications which focus on Alaskan Indigenous peoples so as to compliment the field of research in our department on Indigenous rights in Northern Canada, Siberia and Scandinavia. The ideal candidate would be willing to spend a year working with a local community association, a regional governance organisation, and with an international secretariat to foster research on how multiple concerns and understandings of indigeneity and rights flow in various directions and what the roadblocks are for decision making and representation issues at all levels. The research is also action oriented in our desire to assist in the solution to the problem that many Indigenous people express about a lack of knowledge about what is happening on the world stage in their names and why their local issues are not being taken seriously. We also welcome applications from students wishing to situate this research around issues of development alternatives, whether it be resistance to non-renewable resource extraction or ecological management. How does the presence of active resistance to a development plan figure in the mobilization of Indigenous people across these stages and what can be learned from successful strategies? The successful candidate will join a vibrant post graduate research environment in the Department of Anthropology which has a strong focus on human-environment relations and Indigenous rights
