Industrial CASE Studentship with the Manufacturing Technology Centre: High Speed Additive Manufacturing - Developing Productivity for Metal Processing (fully funded for 4 years at £19k per year tax free)

Project Description

A fully funded (with enhanced stipend) PhD CASE Studentship (UK/EU only) is available for research into next-generation additive manufacturing (AM) processes based on a new method for selective laser melting of metal powders. The approach is based on diode area melting (DAM) using arrays of laser diodes for efficient, scalable, high-speed parallel processing of 3D components.
The project aims to: understand the technical capabilities of the DAM process for production of relevant features and resolutions required for parts produced by the automotive industry; investigate the current prototype system and different machine and laser configurations to help understand and drive improvements in process speed, productivity and cost; benchmark the DAM system with current and emerging AM systems.
The University of Sheffield has an unparalleled range of both additive manufacturing and optoelectronic facilities and expertise, being host to EPSRC Future Manufacturing Hubs in both Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes (MAPP) and in Future Photonics. The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) is the lead centre for additive manufacturing technology within the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and is home to the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing, providing a unique demonstration “factory” for AM.
The Studentship will be based within the Faculty of Engineering, across the Dept. of Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, with a number of training courses and a placement at the MTC supported by an associated travel budget.
The successful applicant will gain expertise in various aspects of optoelectronics, integrated optics, and materials processing at Sheffield. Training in AM design and characterisation, cost modelling and benchmarking will be provided at the MTC. Furthermore, attendance at UK and international research meetings and engagement with both the MTC and the EPSRC Manufacturing Hubs will develop networking and presentation skills.

Please apply online by 31st October at

Funding Notes

The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend not less than £19,009 (ie. current RCUK standard stipend of £15,009 plus £4,000 per annum enhanced stipend) plus 100% of tuition fees covered for up to 4 years. Depending on how you meet EPSRC’s eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to a full or partial award. Award available to UK/EU applicants only.
A budget is available in support of the Studentship to cover research costs and travel expenses.
Applicants should hold or be working towards a 1st or upper 2nd class honours degree in a relevant physical science, engineering or mathematics discipline.
