This PhD project is part of the Cotutelle programme between Coventry University (Coventry, UK) and Deakin University (Melbourne, Australia), and has a duration of 3.5 years.
Coventry University will lead this project, therefore, the successful candidate will spend:
· The 1st Year at Coventry University;
· The 2nd Year at Deakin University; and
· The final 3rd ½ Year at Coventry University.
The supervision team will be drawn from both CU and DU.
Digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 are areas of increasing interest to industry and the research sectors, and this PhD project will explore the role of cutting-edge immersive technologies, i.e., Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR), for future manufacturing.
The project will be undertaken in partnership with Coventry University (UK) and Deakin University (Australia). As such, the candidate will receive research training and supervision from both Universities as well as access to facilities and laboratories in both locations.
There’s an urgent need to advance manufacturing systems to support the workers in performing complex manual assembly tasks (such as assembling battery packs for electric vehicles) using AR/VR/MR technologies as well as emerging sensing technologies and AI.
The project will aim to contribute to the following research questions:
1. How can AR/VR/MR and other emerging technologies advance the current methods and techniques for improving resource efficiency and manufacturing resilience (e.g., flexibility, agility, and responsiveness)?
2. How to deploy those technologies to enhance efficiency, well-being, and functional ability of the workforce?
