Project description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a PhD studentship based in the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. You will undertake research on the synthesis and radiolabelling of molecular inorganic complexes for potential applications in medical imaging via Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The PhD studentship is associated with a recently awarded collaborative Programme Grant, ‘Next generation molecular imaging and therapy with radionuclides’ led by King’s College London, in collaboration with Imperial College London and the University of Southampton and is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). You will be working alongside other Research Fellows and PhD students working on projects in inorganic and coordination chemistry in the Reid group and will undertake the radiolabelling experiments (mainly radiofluorination with F-18) in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences at King’s College London (based at St Thomas’ Hospital), working as part of an interdisciplinary team alongside other Research Fellows associated with the programme.

This project is at the synthetic chemistry/radiochemistry interface and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop main group and transition metal fluoride complexes with macrocyclic and other co-ligands as possible PET tracer candidates, as well as to work alongside GE staff at St Thomas’ Hospital (London) to develop efficient methods for their radiofluorination (using the fluorine-18 isotope, t1/2 = 109 mins.), purification and stability testing. He/she will join a well-established research activity in Southampton and will have access to state-of-the art facilities for the synthesis and spectroscopic and structural characterisation of inorganic coordination complexes. Candidates should hold or be about to hold a 1st class or 2:1 degree in Chemistry or a closely related subject, and have a keen interest in both the synthetic and radiochemical aspects of the project.

Entry Requirements
A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 March 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,009 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years. Due to funding restrictions this position is only open to UK/EU applicants who meet the RCUK eligibility criteria
