Dr Daniel Donaldson  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)

About the Project

As the UK progresses towards decarbonisation targets, the dependency on the electricity distribution network is increasing. Innovative research solutions are needed to meet the growing demand for electricity while maintaining a safe, affordable, and reliable grid. Furthermore, the growth in distributed low-carbon technologies have resulted in a blurring of the traditional boundaries between distribution network planning and operation, requiring more consideration of spatial-temporal data. This research will explore new methods for integrated distribution network planning, with potential research topics including but not limited to i) Distribution network design; ii) incorporation of DER integration and resilience into traditional reliability assessments; iii) design of open-source tools to conduct integrated planning assessments.

Applications are open to students that have, or expect to obtain, a 2:1 or higher degree (or equivalent) in a wide variety of scientific disciplines including engineering, computer science, mathematics, and related areas. An MSc degree in a relevant area or related work experience is desirable, but not essential. Due to the nature of the project, the applicant should be able to demonstrate strong programming capabilities as well as written and verbal communication skills. The successful candidate will join a growing Power Systems research group with opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships with industry. Funding is also provided for career development, training, and presenting work at international conferences.

Interested students should first send an informal enquiry to Dr. Daniel Donaldson with the subject line 'Prospective PhD Student', including the following:

• A brief statement explaining your motivation for pursuing a PhD and how your experience makes you a strong candidate to undertake this research (1-page A4 maximum).

• CV containing academic record and relevant experience.

• Contact details for two referees

School of Engineering, at the University of Birmingham, has strong commitments to diversity and equality of opportunity, and welcome applications from candidates irrespective of their background, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, or age, providing they meet the required criteria.
