Project Description

Background

This is an exciting opportunity for a fully-funded PhD studentship in the Centre for Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems at Cranfield University, in the field of the autonomy on multiple UAS. This PhD investigate and develop integrated sense and avoid algorithm for the operation of multiple UAS. This research is sponsored by Thales under Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science & Technology (ICASE) 2020.

As the capabilities of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) has been developed significantly in recent decades, the application areas of UAS have been rapidly extended. In the near future, heterogeneous and multiple UAS with different tasks are expected to operate at the same time in the same airspace. Moreover, the airspace for UAS operation is also predicted to expand to the airspace for manned aircraft systems. In order for UAS to fly with numerous other manned and unmanned aircraft systems, the high performance on sense and avoid is an essential requirement.

This PhD aims to develop an integrated sense and avoid algorithm for UAS to make immediate decisions from the sensor measurements with minimum signal processing for fast response with high reliability.

Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management. This PhD will be hosted by the Centre for Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems. The Centre for Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems is one of the world’s largest centres of postgraduate education and research, with over 200 MSc and PhD students. In terms of facility, Cranfield University has a range of specialist research facilities available for different research activities (e.g. MUEAVI-multi-user environment for autonomous vehicle innovation facility). The facility operates as a collaborative and flexible space with specialist equipment available for indoor/outdoor flight tests for UAS systems. Also, the Centre for Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems offers the environment for algorithm development and simulation. Also, the centre can offer support, assistance with analysis, and method development for research.

The proposed integrated sense and avoid algorithm is expected to enhance the collision avoidance capabilities of UAS. This will enable us to operate multiple UAS at the same time and contribute to the integration of the airspaces of manned and unmanned aircrafts.

You will be encouraged and supported in publishing own work in high quality peer-reviewed journals. Also, you will have opportunities and supports to present their work at relevant UK and international conferences.

You will obtain knowledge on the technologies for the related disciplines, experience the procedures of algorithm development, and learn skills for simulations and flight tests.

Sponsorship

Sponsored by EPSRC and Thales, this studentship will provide a bursary of up to £18,000 (tax free) plus fees* for four years.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a first or second-class degree, and a Master’s degree, both in engineering or a related area. A background in robotics, automatic control, and/or image processing would be a distinct advantage, as would experience in UAS and flight test.

Funding Notes

Applicants must be UK national to be eligible for this funding. Sponsored by Thales through ICASE 2020, this studentship will provide a full bursary for 3.5 years upto £18,000 per annum depending on qualifications, plus full tuition fee at the UK rate.
