This project will build on previous research within the department to characterise and understand the interaction between medical materials and skin such as gloves, incontinence pads, masks and dressings. This area is of vital importance to improving the comfort of products, reducing damage to skin, preventing complications from medical treatment and in reducing the risk of infection especially in older patients and those with co-morbidity. Sensation through medical materials is critical to detecting pain, abnormalities and precision during surgery. A further motivation is the need to characterise new and existing materials in order to improve sustainability, reduce cost and reduce the risk of allergic reactions. The project will combine imaging and strain measurement techniques with mechanical and tribological experiments to better understand different material and skin interactions and the effect of material properties such as friction coefficient, breathability, flexibility and wettability.
