About the Project

Dundalk Institute of Technology invite applications for the following position: Intrapreneurship: Delivering Innovation, Creativity and Growth for the Irish Hospitality and Tourism Sector

PhD postgraduate Scholarship (Full-time: 36 months)

Supervisor: Dr Kate Johnston (DkIT) and Dr Detta Melia (Technological University Dublin)

This research project will seek to explore the potential of Intrapreneurship for rebuilding the Irish Hospitality and Tourism sector.

Within the last ten years’ the hospitality sector in Ireland has undergone unprecedented disruption. Globalization, increased competition, and more recently the COVID-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on the sector with thousands of jobs losses and a 60% fall in revenues in 2020. Rebuilding the sector is now a major policy issue. In this challenging environment, businesses are trying to find new ways to improve their performance through intrapreneurship, fostering creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial mind-set among employees. This has worked successfully in the high-tech ICT, financial services, and sectors. Creating and fostering this in the hospitality and tourism sector is now a key policy area.

Dundalk Institute of Technology

Dundalk Institute of Technology is a dynamic, world class Institute that has developed an international reputation in both basic and applied research through its Research Centres. This PhD Scholarship is offered through the recently established Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Management & Marketing (ELMM) Research Group, within the School of Business and Humanities at DkIT. The successful applicant will be registered as a full time postgraduate research student in the DCU-DkIT Graduate School. The PhD position will be located on the DkIT campus and the Degree will be awarded by Dublin City University.

Funding

This project is co-funded by the HEA Technological Universities Transformation Fund and DkIT.

The successful candidate shall receive a postgraduate stipend of €16,000 per annum, plus fees and a contribution to their direct research project costs up to a maximum of €2,000 per annum. The duration of this PhD studentship is 36 months. Terms and conditions will apply.

Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria:

Essential/Desirable Qualifications

  • 2:1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) in Hospitality / Tourism or Business-Related Discipline

Experience/knowledge

Undertaken a research project as part of undergraduate degree

Experience of the tourism sector

It is also a requirement that any applicant whose first language is other than English must have a certified English language proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
