Investigating motivational processes during endurance activity

School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences

About the Project

Motivational processes have been largely dismissed or neglected in models of human endurance. Recently, this oversight has begun to be tackled and a motivational process model has been hypothesized and investigated (Taylor et al., 2018; Taylor et al., 2020). This model proposes that an individual’s underlying motivational state influences their ability resist discomfort in favour of endurance goals.

However, several fundamental questions in this area remain to be tested. For example, the relationship between dynamic motivational states and underlying physiology are currently unknown, as is the role of emotional states in this process.

The proposed project will drive towards filling this knowledge gap by using experimental and observational designs to complete some or all the following objectives:

a) Further validate measures of motivational processes during endurance activity
b) Examine the relationship between physiological responses to aerobic exercise and motivational processes.
c) Investigate the role of affect in shaping motivational responses to endurance.
d) Examine whether experimentally manipulating motivation can extend human endurance
