Investigating Organelle movement and inheritance by using a combination of yeast genetics, cell and molecular biology and live cell imaging

Project Description

With every cell division cycle, organelles duplicate and are segregated between progeny cells. Cells have evolved organized ways of organelle segregation. Most insight has come from studies in yeast. In these asymmetrical dividing cells, organelle distribution is mediated by conserved mechanisms. Although key components are known, many questions remain including

1) how do cells secure that only a limited number of each organelle is retained in the mother cell and that the rest is transported to the daughter cell?

2) Young organelles are preferentially transported to the daughter whereas older or damaged organelles are staying in the mother cell. How does a cell discriminate between these organelles?

3) How is transport of organelles to the daughter cell initiated, maintained and terminated?

This project will address these questions using a combination of yeast genetics, cell and molecular biology and live cell imaging.
