Project Description

This industry sponsored studentship is available for 3 years full time jointly supervised between Bristol Medical School and Bristol Veterinary School. The student will join a core team consisting of mathematical modellers, epidemiologists, clinicians and microbiologists as well as industry experts. The postholder will join Bristol AMR, a vibrant, multidisciplinary, cross faculty network of researchers working on the challenge of antimicrobial resistance.

The project involves developing complex mathematical models of infection transmission via close contact and sexual contact. The objective is to evaluate the impact of a vaccine against two related bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitides.

You will receive training in mathematical modelling, cost effectiveness analysis and epidemiology and will work closely with supervisors Dr Katy Turner (Bristol Veterinary School), Dr Hannah Christensen (Bristol Medical School) and industry partners.

There is potential for an interim industrial placement at Biologicals SA in Wavre, Belgium, Brussels during the studentship.

Candidate requirements:

The successful applicant will have an excellent first degree in a relevant subject (e.g. mathematics, engineering, computer science or other science undergraduate with evidence of strong numeracy and computing ability). An MSc in a relevant subject is desirable. You will have excellent communication and presentation skills. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds. Funding Notes

The project is funded by GlaxoSmithkline and covers tuition fees for UK/EU students and a tax-free stipend of £15,000 per year. (This position is not open to non UK/non EU students).
